About Us
Built for the balè moya in all of us
In Amharic, a balè moya is someone with a gift — a master of their craft, and more often than not, that craft is food. The aunt whose doro wot everyone measures theirs against. The neighbor who roasts coffee so well the whole street knows when it's Sunday. This is a house built in their honor.

Balè Moya started out of necessity. The recipes, rituals and stories we grew up with were living only in memory — carried across an ocean, passed down at kitchen tables, and at risk of being lost between generations and continents. We built Balè Moya to preserve them the only way food culture has ever really been preserved: by sharing it.
Our mothers were our first introduction to this food. Every spice blend we sell and every table we set traces back to them.
What we do
We’re an Ethiopian food and coffee culture platform, made to share. That looks like four things:
🌶️ Spices, coffee & pantry
Small-batch berbere, mitmita, shiro and Ethiopian coffee — the building blocks of the cuisine, shipped to your door.
📖 Recipes & guides
Step-by-step recipes from Misir Wot to Doro Wot, plus deep dives into the spices, grains and traditions behind every dish.
☕ Experiences
Coffee ceremonies, cooking classes, dining series, food tours and catering — in New York and beyond. The way food is meant to be shared.
🏺 The Jebena Studio
The world’s first jebena-making class, taught by the women artisans who have carried the craft for generations. Every sale funds Jebena Dreams.
Where we’ve gathered
We’ve hosted coffee ceremonies, cooking demos and jebena workshops at colleges, corporate teams, festivals and cultural events across the US and beyond.
